It used to be that if you wanted to look your best you had to have a tan. Not so anymore. Celebs like Anne Hathaway, Dita Von Teese, Scarlett Johansson and Nicole Kidman should all be given gold stars by their dermatologists! These pretty ladies know that tanning is bad for you, and they are proud to show off a pale pallor. But there are more reasons to stay out of the sun (and out of those tanning beds!) than the chance to evoke old Hollywood glamour. When you choose to ban the tan, you are actually making a healthy choice that can protect your skin from premature aging and melanoma. When it comes to sun exposure, here are a few important things to remember:
- There is no such thing as a healthy tan. A tan is essentially an injury to the skin and the tan is the body's attempt to protect itself.
- UVA rays generated by tanning beds penetrate more deeply into the skin than the sun does. Exposure to ultraviolet radiation can cause your skin to become prematurely wrinkled, spotted and leathery.
